AI Search Optimization for Local Businesses — why 45% of consumers now ask ChatGPT for recommendations, and what it takes to be the business the model names.

Search is splitting into two jobs: ranking a page, and becoming a sentence in someone else's answer.

SEO was built around ranking a page among ten blue links. GEO is built around being selected as one of a small number of entities an answer engine endorses.
Traditional SEO still matters — Google rank still predicts citation probability in multi-platform observational work (Lee, 2026). But the interface on top of it has changed. When 48% of queries trigger an AI Overview that answers the question, and 82% of those users never click a link, ranking #1 no longer guarantees visibility.
No public paper has released causal algorithm weights. The practitioner framework below organizes the signals that consistently appear in 2025–2026 measurement.
Models read review text, not just stars. A 4.7 with specific detail beats a 5.0 with 'great service.'
LLMs resolve strings to entities. Ambiguity kills recommendations. Schema.org and directory consistency are table stakes.
Models need sentences they can quote without hallucinating. Write for extraction, not impression.

The shift: Sessions ended 63% more often when an AI summary appeared (26% vs 16%). The model answered. Most people stopped there.
"ChatGPT-referred visitors converted to leads at 4.7% against 1.9% for Google organic. Legal services showed a ChatGPT conversion rate of 4.9%."

"Great service! Highly recommend. 5 stars."
❌ No practice area ❌ No specifics ❌ No problem-solution match ❌ Zero lexical overlap with user prompts
"After my first-time DUI arrest on a Saturday night, I called and got a consultation Sunday morning. They explained the ALR hearing timeline, got my charges reduced, and the total cost was under $3,500. Aggressive but professional."
✅ Charge type ✅ Urgency ✅ Cost range ✅ Outcome ✅ Personality descriptor — matches "aggressively priced first-time DUI lawyer" prompts

Implication: A tactic that works on Perplexity (review-heavy) may have minimal effect on ChatGPT (content-heavy). GEO requires multi-platform strategy.
Stop optimizing for a perfect star average. Prompt clients to name the matter type, the constraint (cost, timeline, first offense, language), and what the firm did. Reply in specific language, not templates. 74% of consumers look for reviews from the last three months (BrightLocal, 2026).
Implement nested JSON-LD that maps Organization → Person → Service → Area. Keep NAP, practice areas, and attorney names identical on the site, GBP, Avvo, FindLaw, Martindale, Super Lawyers, and the state bar. Ambiguity is the enemy of recommendation.
Lead with the answer. Put numbers and jurisdictional detail in the body, not only in an infographic. Add FAQs that mirror conversational prompts. Publish process and pricing ranges where ethics rules allow. Treat thin service pages as a liability.
Build a monthly prompt set for the modifiers that win work — "first-time DUI," "payment plan," "bilingual," "trial experience," plus the city. Record who gets named. Fix the pages and profiles that would have to exist for your firm to be the grounded answer.
Google rank still predicts citation probability in multi-platform observational work, and AI Overviews draw heavily from pages that are already retrievable (Lee, 2026). GEO without indexable, reputable pages is a speech written for an audience that never enters the room.
Models change without notice. Live generative products update retrieval stacks, citation policies, and safety refusals silently. Legal is a YMYL category. A tactic that raises citation on Perplexity can do nothing on Claude.
The 45/30/25 weighting is a practitioner allocation, not an algorithm. No public paper has released causal weights for live LLM recommenders. The supporting data comes from named surveys, conference papers, and vendor studies, each with its own sample and incentive.
GEO does not replace the last twenty years of local SEO. It changes what "winning" looks like when the click never happens.
